Benefits of Meditation

Down through the ages, the wisdom teachings of the great Masters have reminded us of our fundamentally spiritual nature, the peacefulness and happiness of the soul, and the paths and practices that help us to find this happiness. They tell us that the secrets of happiness and successful living are in fact already inside us and that meditation is a powerful key to unlocking these secrets. Meditation is not a philosophy or religion or dogma but simply a way of being, of reconnecting to a deeper part of ourselves. It invites us to set aside a little time each day to cultivate our practice, quieten the chatter of the mind, and bring to the fore the peace, insight, self-knowledge and happiness inherent in our deeper nature.

Sri Chinmoy

Spiritual master, poet, writer, artist and world peace dreamer, Sri Chinmoy was born in 1931 in Bengal, India and spent more than twenty years of his early life in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram under the tutelage of numerous great Indian teachers and scholars. In 1964 he travelled to New York City to share these teachings and insights with seekers in the West, making this city his home until his final days in 2007.

During his 76 years of life, he founded the worldwide Sri Chinmoy Centre, a global organisation whose activities are dedicated to fostering a more peaceful world through initiatives in sport, music, humanitarian aid and various community projects. Sri Chinmoy stressed the necessity of a spiritual approach to world peace and encouraged the teaching of meditation as a foundation, seeing the inner peace that meditation cultivates as a pre-condition of any lasting peace in the world. Sri Chinmoy’s creative outpouring and tireless dedication have resulted in an astonishing legacy of writings, works of art, musical compositions and inspiration – his life now stands as one of the most remarkable of our times. Frequently Asked Questions

A: First off—welcome! Meditation isn’t about being perfect or having a completely silent mind. It’s simply about showing up for yourself. Start small—just 5 minutes a day in a quiet space. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and focus on how it feels. If your mind wanders (which it will!), gently bring it back. No pressure, no judgment. Think of it like training a puppy—kind, patient, and consistent. Over time, it gets easier, and you’ll notice a sense of calm settling into your life. You got this!

A: Nope! Getting distracted is completely normal, and guess what? That means you’re actually doing it right. Meditation isn’t about stopping thoughts—it’s about noticing them without letting them control you. Think of your thoughts like passing clouds; acknowledge them and let them drift away. If you feel restless, try guided meditations or focus on a simple mantra. It’s all about what works for you. The fact that you’re even trying is already a win! Keep going.

A: I hear you! Life gets hectic, and the idea of setting aside time to just “sit” can feel impossible. But here’s the thing—meditation doesn’t have to be a long, dramatic ritual. You can sneak in mindfulness while brushing your teeth, walking, or even sipping your morning coffee. Just take a deep breath and be present. Even two minutes of focused breathing can shift your entire mood. Start small, stay consistent, and watch the magic happen.

A: Absolutely. Meditation isn’t just about relaxation—it’s about changing how you respond to stress. Instead of getting caught up in anxious thoughts, meditation helps you step back and see them for what they are: just thoughts, not reality. It teaches your mind to slow down, your body to relax, and your heart to feel safe. The best part? The more you practice, the more peaceful and resilient you become. You’re not alone in this, and meditation is here to help. One breath at a time.
